HIKING IN THE NATIONAL PARK: 

AIGÜESTORTES – PURE NATURE

The tour we suggest goes through the national park of Aigüestortes and Lake Sant Maurici as well as the Vall d’Aran, situated in the heart of the Pyrenees. It is the most genuine representation of High Mountains that one can see in this range.

The National Park of Aigüestortes, created in 1955, is unique in its category in Catalonia. Its geomorphology is one of the clearest examples of the glacial phenomena in the Quaternary. Its granite and slate base forms peaks and crests, which are rougher in the first case and softer and more rounded in the second. Water is, at present, the most representative element. More than two hundred lakes, as well as rivers, torrents, waterfalls and marshes like the ones that make up the “aigües tortes” (meaning twisted waters) give this park the most beautiful landscapes in the Pyrenees.

Famous for its richness in flora and fauna, you can find hundred-year-old fir trees and black pine tree forests where the izard, the capercaillie, the marmot and the mythical bearded vulture live.

During the crossing you have the possibility to climb different peaks, like Pic del Portarró d’Espot and Ratera, from where you can enjoy open, panoramic views of the peaks in the Pyrenees and old glacial cirques, now full of beautiful lakes.

ITINERARY: Day 1: Arrival at the Girona railway station or at Girona airport and transfer to Vall Fosca in Pyrenees. Day 2: Crossing on foot Cadbella - Refuge La Colomina, a 5-hour walk. Day 3: Crossing on foot Refuge La Colomina - Refuge L’Estany Llong (Aigüestortes), a 5-hour walk. Day 4: Crossing on foot Refuge L’Estany Llong - Refuge of Amitges. Day 5: Crossing on foot Refuge of Amitges - Refuge of Saboredo, a 5-hour walk. Day 6: Crossing on foot Refuge Saboredo- Salardú, a 3-hour walk. Transfer to Vielha, capital of the Vall d’Aran and free afternoon. Day 7: After breakfast, transfer to the return point and farewell.

THIS TRIP IS FOR: hikers who are used to walking and who want to enjoy a quiet relaxing week doing sport in full nature.

DIFFICULTY:

Medium effort level with 4 to 6-hour walking a day. Maximum height gain of 750m.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS: Comfortable high mountain huts with wardens and meal service situated in the heart of the Natural Park and family hotels that will welcome us with a rich, varied mountain gastronomy typical of Pyrenees.
