CROSSING FROM THE PYRENEES TO THE MEDITERRANEAN 

WALKING THROUGH TRADITION

Catalunya, home of Dalí, has towns rich in tradition, landscape and history such as Girona, Figueres and Olot.

This route combines the contrasts and colours: from nearly three thousand-meter high mountains like the Puigmal to the Mediterranean sea, just 60km away.

In this exceptional crossing we will visit the Eastern Pyrenees where we will find: a rich Romanesque heritage; the Natural Park of La Garrotxa, the best example of volcanic landscape in the Iberian peninsula and one of the most interesting in Europe; the Medieval village of Besalú, one of the best-known in Spain; and finally the wild rough coast of Cap de Creus

ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arrival at Girona airport and transfer to Molló, a small village situated in the Eastern Pyrenees.

Day 2: Crossing on foot Molló-Beget through old paths that were used for the transhumance and by smugglers as they are very near the French border, a 5-hour walk.

Day 3: Crossing on foot Beget-Oix through the natural area of Alta Garrotxa, the most important for its natural diversity in the Pre-Eastern Pyrenees and where we will see three XI and XII century Romanesque chapels, a 5.30-hour walk.

Day 4: In Santa Pau a small village that perfectly combines nature, sport, leisure and culture we will hike to the beech forest Fageda d’en Jordà and walk through old volcanoes of Garrotxa Natural Park, a 5-hour walk.

Day 5: Day of great contrasts, which will begin with a visit the medieval village of Besalú with its XI century Romanesque bridge (105 metre-long and 7 arches) and after hike to the top of a spectacular MD Mont sanctuary where we will spend the night in an 360º top hill viewpoint,  a 4.30-hour walk.

Day 6: Crossing hike to Albanya across the High Garrotxa Natural Park. a 5.30-hour walk.

Day 7: Rest day in Figueres. Option Dalí museum.

Day 8: Crossing in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus, where the Pyrenees reach the Mediterranean. We will walk along the coast that inspired Salvador Dalí through old vineyards and olive groves, rocky coves, peculiar vegetation and the perfume of the sea. The day will finish in the fishing village of Cadaqués, a 6-hour walk.

Day 9: After breakfast farewell and airport transfer to Girona airport according your international flight.

THIS TRIP IS FOR: hikers who want to know the northeast of Catalonia in a leisurely way, an area of varied nature and culture both diverse and impressing.

HIKING LEVEL: Moderate trek with a maximum of 6 hours walk on rocky footpaths, maximum difference in level up of 700m.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS: we have carefully selected warm comfortable family hotels (in double rooms) that will offer a rich and varied local gastronomy.
